Wailin' Jennys Live Album from the Opera House Just Released!

The final weekend of August 2008 the Canadian alt-folk band, the Wailin' Jennys, arrived in town with a lot of recording gear in tow and a goal of laying down a live recording that would capture the magic of their performances. A year later, the success of their project is now available for all to hear.

"Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House" was just released on Red House Records and communicates the thrill of seeing and hearing this remarkable group. Amazingly, the recording was done in one night, in one take for each tune, encompassing not only their remarkable sound, but their discipline as performers and their ability to perform nearly flawlessly on demand.

To get a taste of this almost irresistible album, have a listen to the stunning tune Calling All Angels. In a timeless rendition of an oft-interpreted Jane Siberry tune, the Wailin' Jennys turn it into a totemic accomplishment, pushing it and the audience far into their atmosphere and then gently touching back down to earth.

Regular performers on Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor, and in venues around the world, the Jennys had a lot of choices of where to record. That they chose the Opera House, with its warm acoustics and haunting history, establishes the venue in the upper echelon of listening rooms in the country and completes a circle of life that was started here in 2003 with a regular program of live music.
