The resurgence of the exotic Burlesque is headed to Jim Thorpe. The movement has become wildly popular in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New Orleans where female based troops and acts perform on a weekly basis then play host to a yearly festival of sorts honoring this generations artists. A handful of local women are hoping to land Jim Thorpe on the increasingly popular nostalgic Burlesque circuit and have come up with a plan to do such a thing.
Brooke Aubuchon (Proprietor of Dragon Town Corsets,),Tara Kubas (Mauch Chunk Historical Society) and Michelle Gallagher (Local Artist) are three independent businesswomen with a love for glamour and things of the past. They are fast at work on bringing the revival of Burlesque dance, a vintage, intimate, exotic experience, together to benefit The Mauch Chunk Opera House.
Jim Thorpe’s First Annual Burlesque Festival is slated for March 27th & 28th 2010. The weekend will be filled with glitter, feathers, glamour and Burlesque talent from all over the country. There will be Burlesque workshops and classes on the history of the art form and more. The Mauch Chunk Museum & Cultural Center will hold a vendor bazaar on both days. And, of course, 'The Big Reveal', in form of tassel and twirl , will be the Burlesque show itself showcasing up to forty exotic musical numbers.
In support of this event, we would like to announce our Intro To Burlesque Class. On December 12th Bay Area performer Eva Valentina will land in Jim Thorpe to host “An Introduction to Burlesque” at the Opera House. This two-hour class will touch upon all the basic elements that make up the world of burlesque so that by the end of the two hours you will know the history, types of acts & how to develop your own act, an overview of hair, make up and costuming, how to pick a name and of course basic dance moves.
